Barramundi
At the risk of opening Pandora’s Box, I am going to show you what I’ve been growing in my cupboard. Part laziness, part curiosity, one dark cupboard and a frisky sweet potato makes…
a lobster!
Dave was entertained by this, until he learned that the sweet potato lobster then became
Lobster Salad! Made in true vegetarian style, with no lobster, just roasted sweet potato, blanched green beans, red capsicum, with a macadamia oil, lime and chilli dressing.
All this was really a side for
Whole Barramundi, cooked in foil on the BBQ with sliced garlic, ginger and lemon in its belly and some extra lemon juice on top.
The extra randomness of this post is an homage to the geeks who make my life easier (great IT knowledge and obsession to make things work at optimum efficiency) and at the same time highly entertaining. They admit this grudgingly.
Edit: The barramundi made a guest appearance as the Bigger Fish in this Darths & Droids strip.
Edit 2: In response to some of the comments on this post, in no particular order:
- Is Barramundi ’sushable’? How many times does a new word need to be used to become listed? Anyway, back to the Barramundi. Not to my knowledge. Tuna, salmon and kingfish are the most common and delicious sushi found at Japanese restaurants and sushi bars in Australia. That’s not to say it shouldn’t be attempted…
- Macadamia Nut Oil- this seems to only be available in Australia, but you can also use another nut oil such as walnut or even Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO- also a Naboo-sounding name) with a splash of balsamic vinegar. I often use this instead. If you come across caramelised balsamic vinegar this is also tasty.
- Red capsicum is indeed red pepper, also:
- Eggplant is Aubergine
- Zucchini is Courgette
- Rocket is Arugula
- Coriander is Cilantro
They are all the ones I can think of right now!
Also, there is no D&D convention planned here. Yet. I wonder how many Barramundi would fit on our BBQ? Mmm…
Edit 3: Ok, I will clarify my comment on Macadamias. Yes, we all know they are native to Australia. They are also native to New Caledonia and Indonesia, but in terms of being grown commercially, they are available in Hawaii though apparently the industry is declining there due to poor weather and pestilence (ref: Wikipedia).

Oh my gosh! A frisky sweet potato, how funny are you! Scary thing is it looks pretty amazing. No wonder you just let it sprout. You have become part of my morning ritual, keep it up!
January 20th, 2009 21:18
Thank you for being so tolerant with those “geeks”
I am one of those who reads their Star-Warsy webcomic, so I thank you in behalf of all their fans for the… indirect but necessary support and patience
January 20th, 2009 21:21
The extra randomness of this reply is a curse (or at least a magic spell) from (indirectly) the geeks who make your life easier (and mine more ).
January 20th, 2009 21:45
Mmmh, that looks delicious ^^
January 20th, 2009 21:48
Greetings from Oregon City, Oregon, U.S.A. and thanks for letting your dinner have a cameo in one of the websites that brings entertainment to my life. It looks delicious.
January 20th, 2009 21:52
Greetings from Stockholm, Sweden, as well. Poor Natalie Portman, squashed by a giant fish.
January 20th, 2009 21:55
I was told to come here and give you millions of hits. Unfortunately I can only give you one.
…Oh God. Now I want to read this blog. This is going to make me hungry, isn’t it?
January 20th, 2009 21:57
Greetings from Poland, Tricity.BTW ” Barramundi ” sounds like a name from StarWars;P
January 20th, 2009 21:58
Oh bummer. It’s lunchtime where I sit… (It’s also winter. But that has nothing to do with either the blog, or Darths’n'Droids.)
January 20th, 2009 22:00
I love the article! Followed the link from Darths and Droids to here and I’m glad I did. I think I shall have to start reading it regularly.
January 20th, 2009 22:12
A link from a site about my favorite hobby (Role playing games) leads to a site about the next best thing! (Cooking)
Bon Appetit!
January 20th, 2009 22:14
Wow! I never heard about this fish!
Where did you buy it? Naboo market? Or did a gungan sell it to you? =P
Greetings from brazilian geeks! And I hope you have the million hits that you truly deserve for this site!
January 20th, 2009 22:17
Hi. This blog looks good enough to eat. I’m not a geek, I didn’t get here from the comic. These are not the droids you are looking for. D’oh!
January 20th, 2009 22:20
Greetings from Brazil, this fish really looks delicious (and I don’t usually like fish). I think the comic irregulars could use that potato picture in a strip someday.
Lucky guys, those that had the chance to actually eat this biigger fish.
January 20th, 2009 22:41
The guys at Darths & Droids told me to come here and check out your blog, so I did, and now I am filled with joy that your blog also has an RSS feed. Yay! I am subscribing to your blog as well, because this blog looks full of AWESOME.
January 20th, 2009 22:46
You’re marrying a geek and you like to cook. I think you and I could be friends!
January 20th, 2009 22:50
Nice! A Star Wars fish…. Gee now I am hungry!
January 20th, 2009 22:55
Thanks for helping the comic. : )
January 20th, 2009 23:23
You cast BBQ Bigger Fish! Looks yummy.
January 20th, 2009 23:32
Who knew that the counter spell to Summon Bigger Fish was Summon Bigger BBQ! I’ll bet your hit counter is off the charts for today.
January 20th, 2009 23:39
Bristol (UK) Geek here. Darths & Droids rocks and keeps me laughing all day long. (Irregular Webcomic rocks too). Barramundi on the BBQ in the UK. Lovely.
January 21st, 2009 00:00
Hi. What’s your record for comments, because us comic readers like a challenge.
January 21st, 2009 00:16
I’d like to taste the “bigger fish”, but I can’t get them here in Texas.
January 21st, 2009 00:25
WOW! I wonder if they import such delicacies to the USA? I like what you’ve stuffed and marinated your fish, so I’ll have to try that with some locally available seafood. Granted the frisky sweet potato doesn’t look bad to this omnivore either, so I’ll have to try that as well. Thanks for volunteering for fish disposal duty, it looks a right treat!
Cheers!
January 21st, 2009 00:36
Another geek making a browse-by.
The fish looks good, even after its cameo. The salad looks interesting, but lobster salad without lobster just seems wrong.
BTW, Cristoher is right about the name Barramundi. I believe that will be the name of the next Mon Calamari that shows up in our RPG.
January 21st, 2009 01:23
That is a brilliant sweet potato! I have definitely got to try that!
(The recipe looks good too)
January 21st, 2009 01:51
Greetings from Virginia, via Darths etc. The fish looks delicious, but the sweet potato looks like it should have made the cameo instead!
January 21st, 2009 01:57
And one more geek to go *grins*
This time from Germany (Paderborn in North-Rhine-Westfalia).
Did I read it right, that a probable Darths & Droids Con will happen at your place? Sweet, thanks
January 21st, 2009 02:44
Greetings from Darmstadt, Germany
I was send by the Cheddar Knights, too, to leave a click (possible suicide mission!) and hu… here I am (needing a new Quest)… So.. I search the Blog!
mmh.. the Prawn Sambal Recipe sounds delicious
AND: It’s marked as “keeping Germans sane” … muhahahaha … *bookmark*
January 21st, 2009 02:48
Greetings from Israel, got here by Darth and Droids… that fish made me hungry, so I’m gonna eat something… nice blog, hope you get all the hits you deserve (:
January 21st, 2009 03:08
Another Star Wars geek, from Finland.
There’s always a bigger geek.
January 21st, 2009 03:12
Popped on by from Darth and Droids. I am glad you went for garlic, ginger and lemon stuffing. I somehow don’t think the Queen, her guards and droids would have been as tasty.
January 21st, 2009 03:13
I cast Summon Tasty Recipe here in Seattle, WA USA.
Now if only I liked fish.
January 21st, 2009 03:16
Greetings from Calgary, Canada, via D&D. I wonder, does Barramundi make for good sushi? Is it even sushable (if I may invent a new word)?
January 21st, 2009 04:22
That fish is making me quite hungry…
January 21st, 2009 04:28
The internet is a truly amazing thing. It took a student from the wintery wastes of New Hampshire, USA, to Naboo, and then onto the newest blog to grace his bookmarks list. That barramundi looks absolutely delicious, as does the sweet potato lobster salad. The starving college student in me loves this site for the food, the geek in me loves this site for the great way to make use of all those bigger fish I keep summoning.
January 21st, 2009 04:33
Greetings from Ontario, Canada! Popped in via D&D. I wish I could get macadamia oil here, it sounds delicious! BTW, is red capsicum the same thing as red pepper? I’ve never heard of capsicum before…
January 21st, 2009 04:42
Hi from Montana in the USA. Also incoming from Darths and Droids. The salad and fish look delicious.
January 21st, 2009 04:43
Shouts from Germany. I’m just adding to the comment spam…
January 21st, 2009 04:49
Greets from Kansas City, USA. I might have to cook fish for dinner now… Sadly, I doubt I’ll be able to find barramundi here.
January 21st, 2009 05:09
Intrepid comic reader, here from Darths & Droids … that looks like an awesome lobster salad, I may have to try it sometime!
January 21st, 2009 05:09
Just swinging by via request from Darths & Droids! Nice site . . . and now I’m hungry!
January 21st, 2009 05:11
Greetings from Buffalo, NY! Another visitor from DnD, but happy to be here!
Only thing that would make that meal better would be some hot sauce.
I can almost smell it from here!
January 21st, 2009 05:20
Greetings from Europe via D&D. I always was into visiting Australia. Now I’m even more!
Eating trips FTW!
Lobster salad look splendid. And even without knowing the taste of Barramundi, I can tell that BBQed with garlic, ginger and lemon it must be delicious. Next time I do my trout, I’ll be sure to put lemon inside!
January 21st, 2009 05:35
Mmmmmmmm, looks delicious! No barramundi in this hemisphere I don’t think (posting from soggy and freezing London) but mmmmmmmmmmmmmm time for a trip to the fish market!
January 21st, 2009 05:47
Another one here from Darths and Droids.
I have learnt today how one cooks a summoned bigger fish, and reminded me that I should cook with sweet potato more often.
January 21st, 2009 06:16
Hi from South Carolina, USA! It does indeed look like a lobster.
January 21st, 2009 06:34
Shout out from Boston! If I wasn’t at school (and it wasn’t the middle of winter, making BBQ rather unfeasible) I’d attempt the recipe.
I have to agree with the above posters that barramundi is a very SW-sounding name. I wonder if that had anything to do with it’s selection? Probably not, but it’s fun to think so!
Thanks for supporting the Comic Irregulars, and all of us online geeks by extension!
January 21st, 2009 06:39
Ahoy mon! Thanks for assisting Darths & Droids and hope the fish tasted awesome! I saw that you were tinkering with Swiss Basler Leckerli biscuits and I like trying out honey recipes so I’ll definitely be returnong for another look later. Bon Appetit!
January 21st, 2009 06:53
Nice fish! I will summon it to my belly! *Jabba laugh*
January 21st, 2009 07:08
That fish looks most tasty: I’ve not had a fish braai er BBQ in yonks.
Also, I guess that makes my home country obvious? Greetings from ZA!
January 21st, 2009 07:10
hehe, it would seem there are other women out there just like me, we get some odd requests from time to time, but love our geeks all the same
(I got pointed to this by my husband)
January 21st, 2009 07:14
Hello from San Francisco! I love fish and now I want to try a barramundi. Just one more reason to visit Australia!
Pointed here by D&D. Happy eating!
January 21st, 2009 07:15
May the force be with you.
January 21st, 2009 08:12
I don’t think I can get barramundi in Ireland but I’ll have to try your lobster-less salad sometime.
(*sigh* also a geek who came here from D&D).
January 21st, 2009 08:38
greetings from malaysia, via D&D!
your blog is delicious!
now i’m going to have to check it several times a week religously too.
January 21st, 2009 09:03
Greetings from Murrumbateman, Australia, via Darths & Droids. Thanks for contributing the Barramundi!
January 21st, 2009 09:20
one million hits? Well why not!
Darths’n'droids style.
January 21st, 2009 09:45
May the mass x acceleration by with you.
January 21st, 2009 09:59
Greets from Georgia, USA, by way of Darths & Droids. That’s an impressive sweet potato.
Did it taste as good having sprouted and grown so much? I don’t know if sweet potatoes come from, or would grow well there (or if they’d grow *too* well and you’d have some sort of environmental disaster), but I’ve heard here you can just put one in the ground and grow your own vine. The lobsterless salad sounds like a nifty idea, though.
January 21st, 2009 10:38
Hi!
Got here via Darths & Droids as well. This looks like a great blog! I’ll be coming back to it, I love cooking. I always remember a game designer I admire, S. John Ross, saying cooking is a lot like gamemastering: you gather a bunch of friends, you prepare things for them, you make them enjoy and enjoy as well.
Greetings from Argentina! Hope your summer is coming along as well as ours
January 21st, 2009 11:05
I cast summon bigger portion.
January 21st, 2009 11:33
And yet another geek here, from Hochheim, Germany! (Actually a geek girl-a rare species around here…) I don’t even eat fish, but that one looks and sounds delish! Have you got a bazillion hits on this post yet?
(I’m engaged to a male geek with a -25 on cooking skills tho)
January 21st, 2009 11:37
Hiyo,
Just stopping by from D& D as well, anyone willing to buy a giant fish to squash some royalty deserves many more people stopping by
~ from Brisbane here.
January 21st, 2009 11:40
that is so awsome? was it good? did the fish lose flaver after being photographed and put inDarths and Droids? Can i try to grow one to? will…
January 21st, 2009 11:43
Hi. /zillion hits
January 21st, 2009 11:52
Allo from South Carolina via D&D – yay for BIGGER FISH!!!!

January 21st, 2009 13:56
*You have successfully summoned a geek from sunny Malaysia*
Heh. Looks delicious. I’m gonna steal your recipe and find someone who would cook me a BBQ garlic-ginger-lemon fish
.
January 21st, 2009 14:08
I am The X. I have now graced your site with my awesomenitude. I am NOT a geek…. I’m the KING of the dorks, thank you VERY much.
January 21st, 2009 15:10
We have sea kittens in Australia now? Best eating ones, apparently. What are the best slapping sea kittens? (fish) What other purposes do you use fish?
January 21st, 2009 15:32
Greetings from Clovis California, summoned from Darths… Some mighty tasty-looking recipes here! I’ll be sure to make some return visits.
January 21st, 2009 15:54
Another Geek from Darth’s and Droids.
I’m guessing the metal from the Battle droids added just the right touch of iron.
Thank you for putting up with the weirdness.
Wolfie
January 21st, 2009 17:53
Summoned from Singapore via D & D. You can never have a big enough fish.
January 21st, 2009 18:46
Awesome. I did, honestly, just come here for Darths & Droids subtext humor, but that dish looks good. I mean, the salad looks great too!
I wonder, though, how many of us from D&D? I can’t count that high at 2 in the morning. =)
January 21st, 2009 21:23
And another Darths & Droids follower, someone cast summon bigger readership?
Great cookery, great looking fish and great frisky lobster!pepper side – I’m hungry now…
January 21st, 2009 22:46
Think how easy it would be to shop if he really knew the “spell” summon bigger fish
January 21st, 2009 23:34
Now what am I doing he… oh. Right. I have obviously been summoned to this site via Darth and Droids (now who would have guessed that?) from Nuremberg, Germany.
And my thanks to all of you, Tina for this blog and the contribution to strange ventures, the irregulars for said ventures and the rest of you just for being geeks which I find reassuring – which some people would find disturbing, I am sure. And special thanks you, Val-Kyree (am I allowed to say that she has an account at deviant arts?), for pointing me to irregular webcomics. Hope you read this…
Afterthought: If the prawn sambal can keep one safe in Germany, they should deal it out on prescription. Wish I had a decent kitchen…
January 22nd, 2009 00:07
Hi there! Darths & Droids reader (who’d'a thunk it?) from New Jersey, USA, though I’m currently on a business trip to China — get you two locations in one.
The cooking method sounds awesome, I will have to try that… usually I bake fish along with butter-sauteed mushrooms and onion, adding something new to the mix should be great!
Alas on the lack of the barramundi in NJ, that I know of, but I think it’s a generic enough cooking method it’ll work with lots of types of fish.
January 22nd, 2009 00:36
Greetings from Texas in the US of A. WoW…I’m a big fan of cooking, as well as a big geek. I, like the others, have been sent from Darths and Droids.
Granted, I may have a new favorite food site.
January 22nd, 2009 00:50
Greeting from Copenhagen, Denmark.
I add myself to the list of geeks who have come to enjoy this site as well. I’m afraid that the fish in question will be extremely expensive in Europe
January 22nd, 2009 01:51
I cast Summon Freakier Sweet Potato.
January 22nd, 2009 03:11
Hey, it’s not just geeks who read D&D, that comic produces enough funnies for everybody. THERE’S ALWAYS A BIGGER FISH!
January 22nd, 2009 03:51
*woom* summoned to this site from Darth and Droids.
/wave form Örebro, Sweden.
January 22nd, 2009 04:30
Yet another geek whose culinary horizons have been broadened to include Barramundi and Sweet Potato Lobster thanks to Darths & Droids.
Hit 82 of a zillion.
January 22nd, 2009 06:48
wow! looks amazing! thanks for posting. great to see that such an exquisite animal can sit in a sci-fi comic one moment, and then turned into a completely different art media the second! brilliantly done, in both cases.
January 22nd, 2009 07:04
Darths and Droids have a lot to answer for.. (and Irregular Webcomic) .. hours of enjoyment and now this.. a food blog thrown at an already hungry geek from Sri Lanka.
I love to cook.. the cleaning up after.. not so much.. of course my cooking is like my chemistry.. throw it all in a pot.. put it on the fire and see what blows up..
Great blog, and the bookmarkation has happened (what IS it with geeks and making new words?
January 22nd, 2009 07:25
Wow looks fantastic, I will have to try that recipe =D
Keep up the amazing work and thanks for helping out D&D =D
January 22nd, 2009 09:24
Greetings from Normal, IL by way of D&D!
I wish I could cast Summon Better Food because that looks a lot better than the burnt salmon burger I had last night.
January 22nd, 2009 09:25
Now THAT’S a bigger fish
I’ve just been eating, but it definitly made me want to try some idea from here.
Oh, I’ve forgotten :
Greetings from Paris, France !
January 22nd, 2009 09:36

Good cookery and good geekery: what could be sweeter?
January 22nd, 2009 21:17
And another…
Greetings from Finland (^-^)/
January 22nd, 2009 23:39
Another (Aussie) Darths & Droids (and Irregular Webcomic!) fan, here to keep the hit rate up!
Perhaps I should start writing about Barramundi too – I don’t get anything like this number of comments on my blog!
Interesting site – you seem well committed to keeping up the quality of content, and the images.
January 23rd, 2009 04:10
Lovely!
January 23rd, 2009 05:09
Greeting from South Africa (no I dont have a pet lion)
The Food looks great!
January 23rd, 2009 06:13
More appreciation from a Darths & Droids fan.
Your frisky sweet potato reminds me of a Head Crab from Half-Life…and I am giving SERIOUS consideration to making some “Head Crab Salad”.
January 23rd, 2009 14:50
Can you recommend a bigger-fish for this that can be bought/summoned in America?
January 23rd, 2009 18:20
Hmm… Bit late to hit the rest of geeks, damn work… But greetings from Tampere, Finland.
Have to keep an eye on your blog now. My gently geek tolerant lady might have use for ideas in cooking. So big thanks from here!
January 23rd, 2009 19:14
Greetings from St. Louis, MO USA! I was laughing so hard at the strip, I nearly couldn’t click the link to here….and now, I’m just really, really hungry….
But I’m still giggling… XD
January 23rd, 2009 22:57
Hello! Another one here from Darths and Droids. Congratulations on your mastery of cookery, and of making it all look really mouth-watering too. Also, congrats on the funniest sweet potato photo I have ever seen on the internet! (Admittedly, the competition is not up to much).
A lovely weekend to you and your bloke, cheers to you both for making online a funnier and more hospitable place!
January 24th, 2009 17:58
I wonder how many people came from D&D just to comment on the bigger fish?
One more, I suppose. Man, that fish looks tasty.
January 26th, 2009 04:06
Another from Darths and Draoids. Good fish and thanks for your tolleration of all us odd and yet strangely compleing Star Wars and RPG nuts!
January 27th, 2009 01:02
oh, that is so mouthwatering, will send this to my amazing sister-in-law for my upcoming visit – wonder which danish fish will be able to replace baramundi?
- that fish had me turned to like instead of hate the new star wars movie, what an amazing power of participating in true humour, thanks for agreeing to get it!!!
January 27th, 2009 09:05
Wow Tina, what have you been growing in your cupboard..you should take a close up of it and let use guessing what sort of plant that is…greetings from Port Moresby
January 30th, 2009 18:10
yep, another Darths and droids fan here, coming to see what happened to that bigger fish after it was summoned… and I must say, it looked like fantastic eating! barra is always an enjoyable feed
Im an aussie, who plays DnD, who grew up on star wars, and loves eating fish, so it all ties together rather well lol.
February 3rd, 2009 11:54
Another Darths and Droids fan chiming in with his 2-cents. Recently, while visitining my folks over the Australia Day long weekend, my mother prepared Barramundi fillets in breadcrumbs which was quite delicious and only the second time I have had Barra. Nice work on the lobster potato
February 6th, 2009 13:53
Greetings from Fresno, Cali, in the US, via Naboo, Coruscant, and a galaxy far, far away! well, I must say, at least I know I’m not alone in morning the unlikley-hood of getting barramundi here…
great job on the blog, and i will continue to return, mostly for the recipes….for my girlfriend…
shutting up now…sorry…~cringes~ please don’t hit me….
February 8th, 2009 12:22
You’re wrong on the macadamias. They’re *native* to Australia. They’re just grown a lot in Hawaii.
February 14th, 2009 01:29
A geeky wife here linked over from D&D. Lovely looking recipe for bigger fish! I’ll have to send my foodie sister here to read, as well as stealing your bigger fish recipe to spice up our summer trout fishing trip.
—From snowy Syracuse NY, USA
March 16th, 2009 15:33
Yumm… nice recipe for making Bigger fish.
Congratz on getting married to one of D&D’s geeky webowners.
March 19th, 2009 01:24
Goodness, it took a while to get to the bottom of this page. I am a tad behind on the D&D webcomic, but it makes my coffee breaks so much more enjoyable. Thankyou for donating your bigger fish to such a worthwhile cause! Please tell the creators of the comic that they are geniouses! Enjoy your Fish!
From Welland, Ontario, Canada.
April 17th, 2009 11:06
Jumped on over from Darthsanddroids. The fish looks so much better on the plate grilled then on the Queen of Naboo
Great blog ^_^
April 17th, 2009 20:55
Another hit from the friendly geeks here. Luckily it’s lunchtime so wandering in here getting my saliva running was good timing
May 22nd, 2009 16:57
Yet another Darths & Droids reader (Swede, of the non-turnip variety) here. Awesome sweet potato, reminds me of those “bonsai potatoes” ( http://www.bonsaipotato.com/gallery.php?gallery_type=1 ).
July 30th, 2009 06:47
For DarthsAndDroids!!!
For female support of male geekism!! – Now that’s something you don’t see everyday.

Greetings from Kansas!
I find this to be a fitting end to the “Bigger Fish,” so here’s a hit from one of the endangered species known as the female gamer. ^-^

Greetings from Utah!
After reading that recipie, I desperately want some Bigger Fish to eat while I read D&D

You’re internet-famous, congrats! Also, you’ve been paid further tribute here:

so hopefully you get a few more hits out of that. The non-gamer girl who still appreciates the gamer guy is as endangered as the gamer girl, equally precious, equally awesome. Offering up delicious and attractive recipes is just icing on the cake. I’m definitely passing this on to my own fiancee (even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.) So congratulations to you both from the home of GURPS and Lord British, and may your life together be as delicious and fulfilling as I hope the Bigger Fish was.

A single appliance that you’ll need inside your kitchen area to help keep it clean and neat is a dishwasher. Regardless of whether you have a huge or a small kitchen, you’ll desire to have an additional appliance that would nevertheless keep your kitchen area in buy. A dishwasher that could do this task is a slimline dishwasher. This dishwasher is quite functional, and it is made narrower so that it can easily fit into small spaces
